Sher-e-Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque was one of the greatest leaders of Bangladesh. He was born at Chakhar in Barishal in 1873. He was exceptionally meritorious. He passed the Entrance Examination in 1889 from Barishal Zilla School with Divisional Scholarship. He passed the B.A in 1894 from the Presidency College, Kolkatta with honours in three subjects at a time. He passed the M.A. in Mathematics and obtained his degree in law in 1897. In 1900 Mr Haque began to practice in the kalkatta High Court independently. In 1906, an Educational conference of the Muslims of India was held in Dhaka and the All India Muslim League was formed. Mr Haque was very skilled and efficient in all his works and deeds. So, he was appointed a Deputy magistrate, a very respected post, by Sir B.F. Fuller. In 1911 , Mr Haque gave up his post and joined the Kolkatta High Court again . In 1913, he became the member of the provincial Legislative Assembly. In 1918, he became the General Secretary of the All Indian Congress and President of the All India Muslim League. In 1935, Mr Haque became the first Muslim Mayor of Kolkatta Corporation. in 1937, he became the Chief Minister if Bengal and continued his service for several years. He set up a good number of educational institutions for the poor as well as higher education. He was large hearted and had sympathy for the poor. Mr Haque, this great man died on the 27th April, 1962 in Dhaka. He was buried in the Dhaka High Court compound.
