Leonardo Da Vinci was born in the town of Vinci, Italy, in 1452 His father was a successful government official and his mother was a peasant women. Leonardo spent his early life on his family's farm. He had a great love for outdoor activities. He bought caged birds and set them free because he could not stand to see birds in cages and also because he wanted to learn exactly how birds fly.
By 1469 Leonardo had moved with his father to Florence, where the youngman was apprenticed to the painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocctio. By 1472 he was listed as a master of the Painters Guild. A few years later he paintersuch a beautiful angel that showed his skill in painting. His painting "The Adoration of the Kings,' had a tremendous influence on younger painters.
About 1482, Leonardo left Florence to enter the house of Londovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. He performed a variety of services there. He painted court portraits, supervised pageants, designed costumes, built machines of war, and even installed central heating in the palace. In Milan he worked on his magnificent painting 'The Last Supper.'
One of Leonardo's greatest interest was the study of human body. He became fascinated, with its inner structure and dissected corpses to find out how the body was put together. Leonardo looked at plants as closely as he looked at men, animals, and made many discoveries about plant growth. Leonardo's life in the Court of Milan was suddenly interrupted in 1499 by the invasion of the French army. Leonardo's patron Londovico was taken prisoner, and Leonardo fled to Venice. The next year he went back to Florence still an active centre of art. Leonardo served prince Cesare Borgia in Rome as a military engineer. In 1503 he again came back to Florence. The most outstanding and completed painting of this period was the portrait of a Florentine lady, the Mona Lisa.
